UNICROSS Workers Celebrate Sack of Vice Chancellor
The staff of the University of Cross River State, Unicross, gathered in jubilation on Wednesday as news spread of the suspension of Vice Chancellor Professor Augustine Amgba. Workers from three different unions – the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) – expressed their relief and gratitude towards the Governing Council of the University for taking decisive action.
Outcry Over Unpaid Salaries
The spokesperson for the Joint Action Committee (JAC), James Igrison, highlighted the longstanding issue of unpaid salaries and allowances that had plagued the workers for months. He commended Governor Bassey Otu for listening to the workers’ grievances and supporting the decision to remove Professor Amgba from his position. “The workers had reached a breaking point,” he explained, “with some earning meager salaries and facing financial difficulties due to the non-payment of their dues.”
Unwavering Protest
Despite repeated protests and demonstrations by the workers, Professor Amgba had remained unresponsive to their pleas for fair compensation. The workers had resorted to drastic measures, even going as far as locking the gates of the university in protest. However, the Vice Chancellor’s lack of action only served to escalate tensions and solidify the workers’ resolve to see him removed from office.
A New Chapter for Unicross
With the suspension of Professor Amgba, the Governing Council appointed Professor Stephen Oshang as the Acting Vice Chancellor Academics. This change in leadership marks a new chapter for Unicross, one that the workers hope will bring about positive change and prioritize their well-being.
Government’s Reaction Awaited
As the State Government has yet to react to the suspension of the Vice Chancellor, many are curious to see how they will respond to this significant development. The workers remain hopeful that the government will continue to support them and prioritize the interests of both the university staff and the students.
In conclusion, the jubilation felt by the Unicross workers following the sack of the Vice Chancellor is a testament to their resilience and determination to fight for their rights. The removal of Professor Amgba signifies a turning point for the university, one that has the potential to usher in a new era of transparency, accountability, and respect for all members of the Unicross community. As the dust settles, all eyes are on the State Government to see how they will navigate this transition and ensure a smooth and productive academic environment for all.
