About 30 armed policemen have taken over all the entrances to the House of Assembly quarters located along the Aba Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Both the first and second gates to the lawmakers’ estate are safeguarded by the police with about 30 patrol vans used to block the entrances. The development came shortly after the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly claimed that the governor was planning to demolish the quarters following his recent surprise visit to the facility.

Governor’s Visit to the Estate: Harmless Inspection or Something More?

Governor Siminalayi Fubara explained that his visit to the estate on Thursday was harmless. He questioned, “Is the Assembly quarters not part of my property? Is there anything wrong in going to check how things are going on there?” The governor stated he went there to see for himself how things are as there was a new speaker in place. However, following the alarm raised by Amaewhule, the anti-Fubara lawmakers and some APC chieftains kept vigil around the estate till daybreak.

Concerns Over Police Presence and Activities

As the armed policemen barricaded the gates to secure the facility, the Sim Media Volunteers (SMV) voiced their concerns. They called on the Inspector-General of Police to monitor the activities of policemen in the state and ensure they observed the rules of engagement. The convener of the group, Frank Kilsi, decried the arrest and intimidation of the governor’s supporters by the police. Kilsi expressed worries that further harassment could lead to anarchy and a breakdown of law and order.

Upholding Democracy and Peace in Rivers State

Kilsi appreciated the overwhelming support of Rivers people for Governor Fubara and urged all relevant stakeholders to ensure the rights and freedom of the people are upheld and protected. The youths of the state, under the aegis of SIM Media Volunteers, emphasized the need for peace, justice, and development in Rivers State. They commended the governor’s peaceful disposition and commitment to the security of lives and property and asked him to continue on the path of development.

Economic Prosperity and Development Initiatives

The group highlighted the forthcoming Rivers State Economic and Investment Summit as part of the first anniversary of Governor Fubara’s administration. They acknowledged the governor’s efforts to open up the state for investors and promote economic prosperity. Despite the challenges faced, they urged detractors to stop their callous actions against the governor and his government, emphasizing the need for support and collaboration for the state’s advancement.

In conclusion, the situation at the House of Assembly quarters in Rivers State has raised concerns and tensions among stakeholders. As the police presence intensifies, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize peace, dialogue, and respect for the rule of law. Governor Fubara’s commitment to development and security in the state should be supported and celebrated, as the state moves towards a season of economic prosperity and growth.
