Nigeria Needs Good Governance, Not a Change in System – VP Shettima
In a recent address at the 30th anniversary celebration of Yusuf Ali & Co (Ghalib Chambers) in Ilọrin, Vice-President Kashim Shettima made an important statement regarding Nigeria’s governance system. He emphasized that democracy’s survival in the country hinges on adherence to the rule of law and the quality of governance rather than a switch to a parliamentary system. Shettima rebutted the calls for a change in governance system by stating, “Democracy can only survive by adherence to rule of law and quality of governance, not by parliamentary system as being canvassed by some people.”
The Importance of Good Governance
Shettima highlighted the crucial role that good governance plays in upholding democracy. He pointed out that many nations have collapsed due to a lack of access to truth and justice. According to him, the denial of justice and frustration of accessing truth have led to the downfall of several countries. This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective governance in ensuring the stability and prosperity of a nation.
Celebrating Integrity in Leadership
During his speech, Shettima lauded the integrity and leadership qualities of President Bola Tinubu. He emphasized that Tinubu never interfered with the electoral process and the presidency never used its power to target perceived opponents facing trial. This acknowledgment of ethical leadership serves as a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting the importance of leaders who prioritize the rule of law and transparency.
Reflection on Past Failures
Former Minister of Works, Raji Fashola (SAN), took the opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s past experience with the parliamentary system. He posed a critical question regarding the reasons for the system’s failure and whether the country is prepared to address those issues now. Fashola’s inquiry prompts a deep introspection into the challenges and shortcomings of past governance systems, urging for a proactive approach to build a more robust and effective system for the future.

Moving Forward with Good Governance
In light of the discussions at the event, it is clear that Nigeria’s focus should be on enhancing good governance practices rather than implementing a new system. The emphasis on upholding the rule of law, ensuring access to justice, and promoting transparency in leadership are essential pillars for the country’s progress and stability. As Vice-President Shettima aptly stated, democracy’s survival depends on the commitment to these principles, rather than mere structural changes in governance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Vice-President Shettima’s remarks at the 30th anniversary celebration shed light on the importance of good governance in sustaining democracy. By emphasizing the significance of adherence to the rule of law and the quality of governance, Shettima highlights the core principles that underpin a strong and resilient political system. As Nigeria navigates its path forward, it is crucial to prioritize integrity, transparency, and justice in governance to ensure a prosperous and stable future for the nation.
