NLC, TUC Demand Reversal of New Electricity Tariff Hike
In a bold move aimed at safeguarding the rights and interests of Nigerian citizens, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly issued an ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Power Sector operators. The ultimatum demands the reversal of the recent increase in electricity tariff within a mere week, highlighting the urgency and gravity of the situation.
Addressing a gathering to commemorate the 2024 Workers’ Day in Abuja, Mr Joe Ajaero and Mr Fetus Osifo, Presidents of the NLC and TUC respectively, voiced their discontent with the current state of affairs in the country’s power sector. They emphasized the detrimental impact of the erratic power supply on the nation’s economic development, painting a grim picture of the consequences if the issue remains unaddressed.
The union leaders stressed the pivotal role of energy management in national prosperity, underscoring that effective energy utilization is a cornerstone for economic growth. They underscored that the mismanagement of the energy sector poses a significant threat to the stability and progress of the nation, cautioning against the dire implications of neglecting this critical aspect of infrastructure.
“It is imperative for the government to engage with the populace in creating comprehensive frameworks that ensure equitable access to energy resources for all Nigerians,” remarked Mr Ajaero and Mr Osifo. They noted with concern that despite the privatization of the power sector over a decade ago, the challenges persist unabated, casting aspersions on the efficacy of the current system.
The union leaders drew attention to the unethical practices prevailing in the power sector, citing the imposition of exorbitant tariffs for undelivered services as a blatant exploitation of consumers. They vehemently condemned the practice of estimated billing, labeling it as a form of extortion that erodes the financial well-being of ordinary Nigerians. The duo decried the lack of transparency and accountability in the sector, calling for immediate action to rectify the injustices perpetrated against the citizens.
As the deadline looms for the authorities to reconsider the decision on electricity tariffs, the NLC and TUC stand firm in their resolve to champion the cause of the Nigerian people. The unions remain steadfast in their commitment to advocating for fair and reasonable policies that prioritize the welfare and interests of the populace, ensuring that the collective voice of the citizens resonates loudly in the corridors of power.
Also, the union leaders vehemently criticized the practice of estimated billing, denouncing it as an exploitative mechanism that perpetuates financial burdens on consumers. They decried the exorbitant costs imposed on citizens for electricity services that often fall short of delivery, labeling it as both extortionate and fraudulent. The demand for transparent and equitable billing practices resonates deeply as a call for justice and accountability in the power sector.
In conclusion, the ultimatum issued by the NLC and TUC serves as a poignant reminder of the power of unity and advocacy in championing the rights and welfare of the Nigerian people. The urgency to address the pressing issues within the power sector underscores the need for decisive action and collaborative efforts towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy future for all.
